"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)

Our 'single step' started in the 1970s when Richard Hughes entered Social Work. He worked mainly in the residential sector with children & young people and their families. He then worked with Older People. Besides ongoing training, he qualified as a Social Worker at Keele University.

He had roles in direct therapy, management, training, lecturing & as a  staff and student supervisor.

After over 20 years in these roles he moved with his wife and family from the UK to Australia  where he continued other forms of 'people work'.

It was only after completing a Social Science degree at the Southern Cross University in 2001 did he decide to create a Counselling and Development Practice. He felt that in order to provide a service with high professional standards then he needed to have the necessary extensive experience and Professional Qualifications. Although qualified as a Mediator, he does not practice in that role but uses those skills within the therapeutic process.

An expectation of the Australian Counselling Association is that Professional Supervision and Development is maintained on a regular basis. It is a condition of Membership.

It is an essential developmental component in the life of a Professional Counsellor whether they are new to the profession or have been practicing for many years and have had extensive training and gained professional qualifications. Supervision is not a managerial task in this sense but it is a way of both gaining insights in the way that Counsellors work with their clients and of ensuring that their clients are getting the best possible therapy. The process allows for both discussing the developmental needs of the counsellor and of the therapeutic task whilst maintaining client confidentiality.
